5 Tricks To Tame Your Curly Hair | Tame Thy Mane

"I have curls just like yours, but they are never tamable"

"Help! My curls are a frizzy mess!!"

"How can I make my curls look more defined?"

Let me tell you the truth, there is never really a correct technique to manage one's curls. Why? Because if you take 20 different curlheads you will definitely find each and every lock is unique and gorgeously structured in its own way. Some may sleep with bare wet hair and wake up with effortlessly beautiful curls while some others will need 3 hours to slather on 5 liters of gels and mousses wishing they will corporate at least a few hours through the day.

However, I do know a few tricks that will do wonders on any curl hair IF done right.

1. Coconut oil with conditioner

If you are someone who hates the smell or feeling of coconut oil in hair, this trick will help you. After shampooing your hair, add a few drops of coconut oil to your usual conditioner. Wash it off, dry and you will notice how moisturized and defined your curls will be with zero greasiness nor smell.

2. Finger-combing

If you want tangle free curls, DO NOT brush or comb your hair while wet. Instead while you are conditioning try to use your fingers to comb through and remove any knots. This will be much gentler on your curls and will not disturb the natural structure of it.

3. Hair serums on wet hair

Once you are out of the shower squeeze out at the excess water and apply a serum, hair lotion or a light oil gently on the surface of your wet hair. This will prep your hair to dry without any frizz. Serums and oils are lighter than gels, waxes and mousses. Therefore this refrains your locks from weighing down which will end up losing your beautiful spirals.

4. Cotton T-shirt wraps

After you apply the products flip your hair down and use a cotton t-shirt, a scarf or a microfiber towel to wrap your hair on top of your head. The soft fabric will absorb the water by protecting your strands from air frizz.

5. Air dry or diffuse

There is only two ways to completely dry any curly hair.  First is obviously air drying. Once you remove your cotton tee your hair will be around 70% dry which will speed your air drying process. My favorite way to air dry is to sleep. As lazy as it sounds this trick has given me gorgeously defined curls without any effort.

If I do not have enough time to air dry, I use a diffuser.

A diffuser is a man made miracle life saver for us curlheads. It is an external attachment that now comes with most hair dryers. The round circumference of the nozzle lets your hair sit evenly while the air does it job. This will evenly dry your hair while protecting the curls. And girl the results are AMAZING!!!
